British Values

Bannerman Road Community Academy supports and delivers a firm commitment to developing and upholding British Values by supporting British Institutions and embracing different faiths.

DEMOCRACY

We have our own School Council that is made up of elected representatives from each class. Children are taught to debate in class, vote for ideas and each year we take a group of Year 5 and 6 pupils to London to visit the Houses of Parliament and to learn about democracy in the UK.

THE RULE OF LAW

We promote respect for the Law through our school rules. Children are taught that they must take responsibility for their actions and that if rules are broken there must also be consequences. We work closely with our PCSO’s, who come and deliver regular talks/ learning sessions for the pupils.

INDIVIDUAL LIBERTY

We provide a safe environment for children which fosters a sense of security. This in turn allows children to make choices, understand their rights and those of others. Children are encouraged to exercise their rights and personal freedoms. Open discussion is encouraged in all learning and particularly in PSHE. We are working towards the Unicef Rights Respecting Award to support with this.

MUTUAL RESPECT AND TOLERANCE OF THOSE OF DIFFERENT FAITHS AND BELIEFS

We are a culturally diverse school and community who mutually respect and embrace eachothers faiths and beliefs. We celebrate each-others festivals and celebrations. We invite leaders from all walks of life to come and share their experiences and beliefs with us. We truly are a community school that embraces our diversity.

A CROSS-CURRICULAR APPROACH

Our assemblies and SMSC curriculum support the delivery of values throughout school life at Bannerman Road. We look at current affairs through weekly news bulletins, sharing in triumphs and making sense of tragedy.  We support eachother through every challenge that life brings.
